Sherway Farmers' Market Opens Friday May 4 in new location at Sherway Gardens Shopping
Centre
Due to construction at Sherway Gardens Shopping Centre,
the Sherway Farmers' Market which opens Friday May 4 will be relocated in the far northeast corner for the 2012 season.
Market vendors will setup each Friday in the parking area bordering The Queensway, between the North Queen St. and Sherway
Rd. entrances to Sherway Gardens. Market hours will remain unchanged from previous years, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Friday, through
to the last Friday in October.
The new
location puts the market in a less congested area of the shopping centre property and still allows for the convenience of
parking close to vendor stalls.
Beyond
the change in location, it will be business as usual with all vendors returning for a new season featuring fresh Ontario-grown
produce and other locally produced favourites including honey, cheese, lamb, venison, mushrooms, sausage, deli-meats, farm-fresh
eggs and baked goods.
An abundance of
asparagus and rhubarb will greet early spring market-goers and the arrival of Ontario- grown strawberries anticipated for
mid-June. For ‘everything rhubarb', including delicious recipes, go to www.rhubarbinfo.com. For asparagus ‘tips'
and recipes go to www.asparagusrecipes.net.
Winter-stored root vegetables, delicious when roasted on the barbecue or
in the oven, will be available until the new season's crops come into season in the weeks ahead. Not to be overlooked are
Ontario greenhouse tomatoes and peppers.
New
to Sherway Farmers' Market this season, and a perfect fit for spring, is Millcreek Flower Farm. Bedding plants, both annual
and perennial, will be available during the early spring market along with
herbs and tomato plants. Later in the season
Millcreek Flower Farm will have tomato plants in patio pots and cut flower bouquets. Millcreek Flower Farm specializes in
Lisianthus (commonly called Prairie Roses), sunflowers, outdoor mixed bouquets (Snap Dragons, Statice, Strawflower, Millet,
Celosia, Kale etc) and cultivated mixed bouquets (Mums, Lisianthus, Carnations, Mini Carnations, Gerbera Daisies, Lilies,
Glads etc.).
Gardeners looking to enhance their beds with hearty, mature Lupines and Hollyhocks, can check in with Ralph
& Emmy Lise Farm Fresh Produce which also features a multitude of colourful hanging baskets throughout the spring.
Wendy's Whipped Butter is another new vendor
that will be at Sherway Farmers' Market this season. "Made by cows, whipped by Wendy" this product is homemade,
contains no artificial flavours, colours or additives and is made in small batches from local ingredients. It's fresh, creamy
and full of old-fashioned goodness.
Sherway
Farmers' Market is located at Sherway Gardens Shopping Centre, Hwy 427 and The Queensway in Toronto (Etobicoke) and is open
every Friday, May 4 through October 26, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., ‘rain or shine'.
